Alone beneath the moonlight, Varis confronts the voice that has shared his mind for years. But some questions have answers neither of them are prepared to hear.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Doing what, exactly.”
Varis sat at the desk, the room now empty, staring down at his journal as the moon cast light through the window. He dipped the pen as he held back his frustration. The Ruidium Corruption that burned in his veins pulsed.
“You keep hurting people I care about. You keep being an asshole. I thought you would change. I thought-”
“You thought that I would be like you? Please. I-”
“Don’t. Interrupt. Me. You have been in control so much lately. You have been doing whatever you want and leaving me in the dark until you let me out in moments I can’t control and are awkward and.. And.. All of it! You didn’t even LET me talk with Irvan and Galsariad! I proposed that meeting… And you STOLE it from me! JUST as you have Stolen Every Other Moment! I am DONE, Sirav. This isn’t fair! I Want my Life back. I want to live and take care of my friends and get to actually be with them! You piss off Corawin. You make Adol sad! You disappoint Babble! FUCKING BABBLE! I won’t allow it anymore!”
“Varis-”
“I SAID DON’T INTERRUPT ME! I am going to be in Control more now! I’m going to get to live! I’m going to be ME! You can take over sometimes, but Not All the time!”
“Understood… Varis, the Ruidium-”
“DON’T START-”
“I’m not. I think it’s amplifying your-”
“So WHAT if it is! Get off your high horse, Sirav! You know what? I want to ask you something for once! WHY did you want that moment with Irvan and Galsaraid? I have heard what you call Gal. You don’t like him. So Why?”
“I was making sure…”
“Sirav… I feel our heart beating harder. You aren’t telling the full truth.”
“I don’t know. I was intrigued by the human. How he hides so much. He barely speaks yet he supposedly has this party persona. It is.. Odd…”
“You know what? I’m going to make you do something for once, Sirav. Call it getting even. I’m going to ask Irvan to take you out somewhere and maybe you can get that stick out your ass.”
“I’m too busy-”
“No no… You are going to. Because, Sirav, I think that juuuust maybe, you need to learn life isn’t war. I know it’s all you were taught. I know that you are such an ass because you are so used to no one caring about you beyond your use. I’m sure he will.”
“And how do you think the traitor is going to react when he learns about what I am.”
“I think he will help you…”
“We will see… We. Will. See.”
